Water is of central importance to human life. We use it as drinking and waste water, to grow our food, and to power our industry and transportation infrastructure. We are mysteriously drawn to open bodies of water where we live and work; nearly half of the world’s population lives within 125 miles of a coastline. Water is also fundamental to our inner life and spiritual well being; it has been a recurring and prominent motif in religion and esoteric mysteries since the dawn of history. An understanding of this dual aspect of the importance of water—its outer nature and its inner nature—is crucial to the healthy development of the planet and our own self development as human beings.

The Center for Anthroposophy, the Wrightwood Press, and the Emerson Waldorf School of Chapel Hill, NC, invite the public to this very special festival of events with Jennifer Greene and Rick Spaulding that will explore the significance, science, and hidden nature of water.

  • May 2-5: Flowform Casting, with Jennifer Greene
  • Friday, May 6: Evening lecture, with Rick Spaulding
  • Saturday, May 7: Seminar, with Rick Spaulding and Jennifer Greene
  • Sunday, May 8: Water Workshop, with Jennifer Greene

You may register for the entire week of events together (a $40 savings--add the "All Events Bundle" to your cart), or register for events individually to suit your schedule and budget (select from the events below and add each one to your cart). If you are registering multiple people at once, please indicate the number for each event in your cart when you check out. If you prefer to pay by check, you may do so using the form on the brochure.

JENNIFER GREENE is the Executive Director of the Water Research Institute (WRI) in Blue Hill, Maine, which operates as an incubator of ideas to deepen understanding of the nature of water through the study of its context, movements, and phenomena. Jennifer travels world-wide offering water phenomena workshops, most notably at the World Water Forums. She works with state and federal environmental protection agencies in the bio-remediation of wastewater, and has the only laboratory in the U.S. working with Schwenk's Drop-Picture Method to look at water quality from the standpoint of minute movement capacities in water.

In 1980, Greene pioneered the work with flow forms in the United States. Since this time, she has also given water workshops at schools, universities, and environmental conferences in the United States, Canada, South Africa, India, and most recently in Switzerland. Jennifer will be giving an extended week-long water workshop at the Center for Anthroposophy in Wilton, NH, this July.

RICK SPAULDING is an independent author, researcher, and lecturer. Rick is co-author of the biography Ralph Waldo Emerson: The Infinitude of the Private Man and co- editor of Natural History of the Intellect: the Last Lectures of Ralph Waldo Emerson, the first print publication of Emerson's last lecture cycle. Rick taught in the Chicago Public School system and in Waldorf Schools for over thirty-four years and has been working at Arcturus, a Chicago-based Waldorf Teaching Institute, for many years.

Flowform casting with Jennifer Greene
Event Description
Monday May 2 - Thursday May 5, Mornings
Flowform casting with Jennifer Greene
Emerson Farm (near the School)

Throughout the week, we will be casting flowforms sponsored by local farms, beautiful cascading forms that create a rhythmic vortex to clean and energize water. The science of flowform technology is used in water purification projects around the world. We will be casting the Jarna flow form, the original design by John Wilkes, the inventor of flow form technology. The Jarna form is often used specifically for mixing preparations used in biodynamic agriculture. Participants will help in casting and assembling the forms.

A single registration covers all four days of casting. Children accompanied by an adult are welcome free of charge.

Friday Lecture with Rick Spaulding
Event Description
Friday May 6, 7:00pm
Wisdom Lives in the Journey: Nature and the Path of Self Development
Rick Spaulding

We will set the theme for the weekend by exploring the idea that “Wisdom lives in the journey.” We will explore the importance of the natural world as an outward picture of the inner life and self-development of the human being, and the special significance of water for defining the course of life’s journey.

Saturday Seminar
Event Description
Saturday May 7, 9am - 3pm
Identity and Correspondence: The Science of Nature and the Science of the Mind
Rick Spaulding and Jennifer Greene
Potluck lunch

Through lecture and demonstration, we will deepen the theme by exploring Ralph Waldo Emerson’s idea that the laws of nature correspond to the laws of the human mind. Emerson observed that the ancient precept to “Know Thyself” has joined with the modern precept to “Study Nature” to become a single maxim. Through Emerson, Thoreau, and Walt Whitman, we will seek to understand the idea that studying nature is like observing a disguised human being, and investigate how to train the powers of observation to perceive the deep mysteries apparent in the observable phenomena of nature.

Water Workshop
Event Description
Sunday May 8, 8:30am - 4:30pm
Form and Flow: Exploring the hidden nature of water
Jennifer Greene
Catered lunch provided

The way we manage our water resources is directly related to how we conceptualize water. The prevailing view is that water is an economic commodity and a purely physical element, an inert “thing”. Yet this view is not shared by indigenous peoples, who are identifying themselves as guardians of water with a sacred responsibility to protect the integrity of lakes, rivers, and wetlands.

These opposing views––of water as inert commodity or as spiritual substance––have urgent significance in the global debate about how best to harness water resources for the long-term benefit of humanity. Could there be some truth in the indigenous traditions that see spiritual attributes in water? What can be actually known about the nature of water? These are some of the questions we propose to ask in this workshop.

We will work with the positive qualities of water, undertaking experiments that reveal water’s capacity for creating movement, form, and rhythm. Through a sequence of strategic questions, we will make the invisible visible. Using hands-on simple hydrodynamic experiments, we will come to understand what makes water “good” beyond simply questions of pollution. The curriculum strives to help the participant develop keener observation skills and awaken an appreciation for the positive qualities of water.

This event is ideal for educators, ecologists, organic and biodynamic farmers, gardeners, those with an interest in environmental sustainability, and all those with an inquisitive mind about the processes of nature.
